EC stands for Electronically Commutated and refers to the type of technology used in the design of these high efficiency fans.  The motor used is a permanent magnet brushless DC type and the on-board PWM controller uses high speed switching instead of brushes to power the fan.

Further information

The fan/motor/speed controller is contained within one package and supplied with 230V, 1-phase and neutral and has a lower power consumption than an equivalent AC-motor driven fan for the same flow or pressure output.

Audible noise is also reduced across the working speed range which can be an advantage in many public area installations.
